News From the Chorus I+II

Part I, 2020

Mixed media / Ready-made buckets, plasticine, iron, pump, water, pigment

Variable dimensions

Stacks of black, water-filled, ready-made buckets are piled into towering columns. Through small holes, a thin, continuous stream, resembling tears, leaks from their sculpted eyes. Hidden pumps keep the water in constant circulation, transforming the towers into slow, self-sustaining fountains. In this installation, the first part of News from the Chorus, I adopt the act of cleansing as a system striving for both the release of liquids and the purification of the soul. Inspired by gargoyles and Greek chorus masks, the sculpted faces hover between the comic and the tragic.

News From the Chorus II

Part II, 2020

Mixed media / Iron, acrylan, fabric, motor, timer, electrical cable

Variable dimensions

Two large-scale fabric sculptures, stuffed with acrylan, stand side by side, resembling oversized car wash brushes. At intervals, they begin spinning rapidly on their axes, driven by a computerized mechanism, until the motion suddenly halts, and they return to their static, motionless state. In this installation, the second part of News from the Chorus, I explore the act of cleansing as an absurd, futile, and unattainable pursuit. A metal chain separates the viewer from the space where the sculptures stand. Devoid of any actual object to clean, the two black brushes aggressively scrub each other, generating noise and gusts of air from the friction of their straps and the force of their spin.
