Stone Rug

2018

Mixed media / Pumice stone, gravel, thread

170 x 260 x 2.5 cm

This work explores the tension between concealment and exposure, warmth and erasure. The stone carpet, designed to cover and protect, reflects on the human tendency to conceal what is unwanted, sweeping it away beneath the surface. Pumice stones, a byproduct of volcanic activity, are often used for decorative purposes, ground covering, and weed prevention. Here, they are woven into a traditional Oriental rug pattern, evoking the dual nature of their function, both to beautify and to obscure.

Approximately 10,000 pumice stones in various natural shades and gravel stones were carefully collected from gardens, public squares, and parking lots across the country. These stones were sorted, drilled, and woven into the final composition, creating a surface that invites both a tactile and symbolic interaction.
